The World’s First Hydrogen Hotel Using Used Amenities

Tokyu Hotels Co., Ltd.

The Kawasaki King Skyfront Tokyu REI Hotel, which opened in June 2018, is the world’s first hydrogen hotel to use hydrogen derived from used plastic to provide electricity and hot water for the hotel. In collaboration with the government and other companies, the low-carbon hydrogen produced in the recycling process is supplied to the hotel’s fuel cell through a pipeline and converted into electricity for hotel use. Furthermore, the waste heat generated during the conversion to electricity is used as part of the hotel’s hot water supply. In one year, a cumulative total of about 300,000 Nm3 of hydrogen was used, and about 450,000 kWh was generated. A cumulative reduction of approximately 200,000 kg of CO₂ was achieved. In addition, during the first year of operation, the hotel conducted a demonstration of how toothbrushes and combs used in the hotel could be used as raw materials for hydrogen, and it also implemented an initiative to return used amenities to the hotel, which attracted a lot of attention from the media.

Development Promotion of Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island Okinawa

Tokyu Land Corporation

Hyatt Regency Seragaki Island Okinawa, whose development we promoted as operator and hotel manager, opened in August 2018. In the development of Onna Village in Okinawa, one of the best beach resorts in Japan, we emphasized the importance of urban development in cooperation with the local community, taking advantage of the rare natural environment and landscape. On the environmental front, the installation of a liquefied natural gas satellite station and the introduction of a gas cogeneration system that doubles as an emergency generator reduced CO₂ emissions by 12,680 tons during construction and 2,486 tons per year during operation. This system, which is the first of its kind in Japan, has been selected by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism for its project to lead the way in sustainable buildings (CO₂ emission reduction type). I would also like to add that it was only through cooperation with the local community that the reclamation of the road and dredging of the beach was carried out as a public project.

Through our business activities, we contribute to the realization of SDG No. 7 (Make energy clean and available to all) and No. 17 (Achieve the Goals through partnership). It is also a member of RE100, an international initiative that aims to procure 100% of its business operations from renewable energy sources. Efforts to achieve zero CO₂ emissions on the Setagaya Line

Tokyu Railways

Tokyu Power Supply Corporation

The Tokyu Line has so far undertaken various initiatives to reduce CO₂ emissions, including the Eco-driving Project. As a further measure, the Setagaya Line has started to run on 100% renewable energy, which emits no CO₂. This reduced CO₂ emissions from the Setagaya Line from approximately 1263 t-CO₂ (equivalent to the annual CO₂ emissions of 362 ordinary households) to zero in FY 2018, and there are no concerns about an increase in CO₂ emissions even if the amount of electricity increases in the future. This trial, the first of its kind in Japan on an urban railway line, was made possible through a partnership between Tokyu Railways, Tohoku Electric Power Company, and Tokyu Power Supply, and we will continue to respond to social needs for environmental friendliness by implementing measures on commuter trains that are familiar to consumers.

Gates and benches using lawn space and elevated bridges for relaxation

Tokyu Corporation

Shibuya Stream and the Shibuya River promenade were built on the site of the former Toyoko Line elevated tracks, creating a new landmark on the south side of Shibuya Station. Shibuya Stream, which is located in the Urgent areas for urban renewal, has been highly evaluated by the government as a public contribution to the revitalization plan for the Shibuya River and has received a premium volume. In cooperation with the local community and government, the Shibuya River, which used to be a stinking, dark, and dirty river, has been transformed into a public space with rows of cherry trees and a lawn. The promenade has a pergola and benches made from a former viaduct and other features that help to create a character reminiscent of the railway. The number of pedestrians tripled near Namiki Bridge and doubled near 100BANCH compared to the previous year. The plaza is also used for local festivals, contributing to the revitalization of the community.

Response to the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake

Tokyu Department Store Sapporo Store

All of Hokkaido (2.95 million households) lost power in the September 6, 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake. While many commercial facilities were unable to reopen, our store, which had a cogeneration system (an in-house power generation system using gas), was one of the first to start temporary sales of foodstuffs and disaster prevention goods, which were in short supply in the province, in some sections the next day. In addition, free cell phone charging stations were set up to relieve the anxiety of more than 200 customers, and our store provided emergency food in response to requests from Tokyu Group companies. As a department store with deep roots in the local community, we contributed to the maintenance of our customers’ lifestyles by providing speedy support to customers in Sapporo, employees of nearby companies, and tourists from Japan and overseas.

New collaboration with a company that employs people with disabilities

Tokyu Department Store Co.

In 2013, "Enchika" was established as a department to employ people with disabilities at Tokyu Department Tama-plaza Store. We provided logistical support essential to the operation of the sales floor, such as labeling DM and preparing wrapping materials. In addition, when we held events using the company cafeteria, we were in charge of sales and the selection of suppliers, which helped us to establish connections with various welfare workplaces for people with disabilities. Therefore, in 2019, under a sales promotion plan, we started a collaboration with Enchika to select products from welfare workplaces selected by Enchika and propose them to customers as in-store gifts. Enchika is involved in the work of making proposals to customers from logistical support and promoting the products of welfare workplaces to customers, thereby providing a new type of support for people with disabilities.
