Environmental Initiatives


Since our founding, we have been ahead of our competitors in promoting environmentally-friendly initiatives while balancing public and business interests.
Please see below for a summary of our history of environmental conservation efforts.

January, 1962 Tokyu Railways introduces Japan's first all-stainless-steel train, the Series 7000, with regenerative braking.
April, 1972 The seedling giveaway, “Tokyu Train Line Greening” campaign (now “Mido*Link Action”), begins.
August, 1974 The Tokyu Foundation for Environmental Purification (now the Tokyu Foundation) is established.
March, 1994 The Tokyu Foundation for Environmental Purification publishes the first edition of “Let's Go to the Tama River,” a supplementary reader for environmental education, and distributes it free of charge to elementary schools in the basin.
September, 1997 The Tokyu Group slogan “Toward a Beautiful Age - Tokyu Group” and the Tokyu Group Philosophy are established. The Tokyu Group Philosophy states that management activities should be conducted in harmony with the natural environment.
1998 A park plan that preserves the nature of the valley in the Inukura Land Readjustment Project in Miyamae Ward, Kawasaki City, is designated a “Model District for Biodiversity Conservation” by the then-Environment Agency.
March, 1999 Tokyu Corporation's Nagatsuta Rolling Stock Factory becomes the first private railway rolling stock factory to acquire ISO 14001 certification.
October, 2000 The first edition of the Tokyo Express Environmental Report is published.
November Head office acquires ISO 14001 certification.
May, 2001 The “Flowering on the Setagaya Line,” involving the planting of flowers and other plants along the Setagaya Line track and in the station premises, begins.
May, 2002 Introduction of the new Series 5000 environmentally-friendly rolling stock. (Compared with conventional trains, the new trains use about 40% less electricity.)
December, 2003 Establishment of an "Environmental Policy" to promote group-wide environmental management based on the Tokyu Group Philosophy
March, 2006 Tokyu Corporation becomes the first privately owned railway operator to receive environmental rating financing from the Development Bank of Japan.
September Environmentally-friendly equipment is installed at Motosumiyoshi Station on the Toyoko Line. (This includes the installation of a solar power generation system, rainwater recycling system, and the greening of station premises.)
November, 2007 The greening of the rooftop and walls of Tokyu Hospital is undertaken.
June, 2008 The new Shibuya Station opens (with a natural ventilation system and radiant cooling system).
July, 2009 The inaugural Tokyu Group Environmental Prize (now the Tokyu Group Environmental and Social Contribution Prize) is awarded.
September, 2010 Tokyu Capitol Tower acquires the first certification given to a development project that contributes to society and the environment through the conservation and creation of greenery (SEGES for urban development) by the Urban Greenery Foundation.
October The Tokyu Foundation for Environmental Purification becomes a public interest incorporated foundation and changes its name to the Tokyu Foundation for Better Environment.
April, 2012 Shibuya Hikarie opens featuring a natural ventilation system, large-scale greenery, full adoption of LED lighting on office floors, and more. It is adopted as a model project for promoting CO₂ reduction in houses and buildings (currently, a project for environmental measures in houses and buildings) by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
June Our stock is selected as a constituent stock of the SNAM Sustainability Index (now known as the SOMPO Sustainability Index), a management product for pension funds and institutional investors that invests in companies with high ESG ratings established by Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Asset Management (now known as SOMPO Asset Management). 
July Our shares are selected as one of the 17 “ESG theme issues” by the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
September, 2013 The energy-saving “Home Eco Diagnosis” proposal is delivered by experts as one of the leading projects of the “Next-Generation Suburban Development” initiative agreed with the City of Yokohama in April 2012.
November, 2014 In collaboration with Kyoto University, the Smart Community Promotion Subcommittee of the “Next-Generation Suburban Development” agreed with the City of Yokohama in April 2012 conducts a “home eco diagnosis” using the Ministry of the Environment's Home Eco Diagnosis software.
August, 2015 Futako Tamagawa Rise Tower Office receives Japan's fourth Gold certification in LEED's New Buildings category.
November Futako Tamagawa Rise receives the world's first Gold certification in LEED's Urban Development category.
December, 2016 Togoshiginza Station on the Ikegami Line, which uses approximately 120m3 of lumber produced in Tama, contributes to forest and environmental conservation in Tokyo and is the first railway facility in Tokyo to be subsidized by a grant.
January, 2019 Minami-machida Grandberry Park receives Japan's first Gold preliminary certification in LEED's Urban Development category for a development that includes a station within the certified area.
March The Setagaya Line becomes the first in Japan to operate on 100% renewable energy, producing no CO₂ emissions.
April We signed the United Nations Global Compact and registered with the United Nations Headquarters as a participating company.
April The Tokyu Foundation is established by the merger of the Tokyu Foundation for the Environment, the Tokyu Scholarship Foundation for International Students, and the Gotoh Memorial Cultural Foundation.
October We become the first corporate group in Japan to join RE100, including our railway business.
April, 2020 Tokyu Corporation has introduced renewable energy at its head office, the Tokyu Nampeidai-cho Building, and its annex, the Tokyu Sakuragaoka-cho Building.
June Minami-machida Grandberry Park Station (renamed from Minami-Machida Station on October 1, 2019) on the Den-en-toshi Line receives Gold certification as a station building in LEED’s New Buildings category.
July Minami-machida Grandberry Park becomes the first park in Japan, including the station building, to receive Gold certification in LEED’s Urban Development category.
September We express our support for TCFD's recommendations.
September SDGs Train 2020 ,a wrapped train designed to support the achievement of the SDGs, begins operating using 100% renewable energy.
June, 2021 We are elected for the 10th consecutive year as a constituent of the SOMPO Sustainability Index, a management product for pension funds and institutional investors that invests in companies with high ESG ratings as set by SOMPO Asset Management.
July 100% Renewable Energy Power Installed in 23 Properties Managed by Tokyu Real Estate Investment Management, Inc.
November Tokyu Power Supply, Tokyu Bus Corporation, and Setagaya Ward jointly supply electricity from the Miura Solar Power Plant owned by Setagaya Ward to 50 bus stops, mainly along Setagaya Street, Futako Tamagawa Rise, a complex facility in Setagaya Ward, and the Gotoh Museum, a center for culture and art in Setagaya Ward, using virtually 100% renewable energy (the first CO₂-free bus stops in Japan)
March, 2022 "Environmental Vision 2030" to realize a decarbonized, recycling-based society and a level that limits global warming to 1.5°C, to achieve 2050 decarbonization and RE100, and to update our environmental targets.
April Tokyu Lines became the first company in Japan to begin operating all eight of its rail lines on 100% renewable energy with virtually zero CO2 emissions.
September On September 2, the Tokyu Group centenary, we implemented an initiative to supply electricity to the main offices and commercial facilities of the Tokyu Corporation Group and general households subscribing to Tokyu Denki with CO2-free electricity derived from 100% renewable energy sources for one day only.
September Osaka Gas, GPSS Holdings, and the Tokyu Corporation Group jointly initiated the development of solar power plants through the Corporate PPA.
October Toin Gakuen, Tokyu, and Tokyu Railways signed an agreement on mutual collaboration, including a demonstration of perovskite solar cells, with the aim of optimizing local energy production for local consumption and surplus and shortage in the region.

October, 1989 Tokyu Tama Den-en-toshi wins the Prime Minister's Prize at the Urban Greenery Fund's Green City Awards.
October, 2001 We receive the Urban Greening Merit Award from the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism for the “Tokyu Train Line Greening” campaign (seedling giveaway).
April, 2003 The Inukura Land Readjustment Project wins the Minister of the Environment Award at the 12th Global Environment Awards sponsored by the Fuji Sankei Group.
June, 2004 We receive the Kanto District Transport Bureau Director's Award for Environmental Conservation Merits from the Kanto District Transport Bureau.
December, 2006 We are awarded the Minister's Commendation for Excellent Transportation-related Environmental Conservation by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
March, 2008 Our CSR Report (2007) wins the Sustainability Reporting Excellence Award at the 11th Environmental Communication Awards sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment.
July Tokyu Hospital receives the Tokyo Metropolitan Environmental Award.
April, 2009 The environmentally conscious at new Shibuya Station wins the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Award at the 18th Global Environment Awards sponsored by Fuji Sankei Group.
November The Cool Biz Train is recognized and awarded the TEAM COOLBIZ award by the Cool Biz Promotion Council.
October, 2010 Tama-plaza Station on the Den-en-toshi Line receives the Association of Railway Architects' Best Association Award.
February, 2011 Tokyu Welina Ookayama wins the Grand Prix in the Other Facilities category of Energy-Efficient Lighting Design Awards 2010 sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment.
February, 2012 Futako Tamagawa Rise Shopping Center wins the Grand Prix in the Commercial and Accommodation Facilities category of the Energy-Efficient Lighting Design Awards 2011 sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment.
January, 2013 Shibuya Hikarie’s “ShinQs” wins the Grand Prix in the Commercial and Accommodation Facilities category of the Energy-Efficient Lighting Design Awards 2012.
April, 2016 Futako Tamagawa Rise wins the Grand Prize for the 25th Global Environment Awards sponsored by the Fuji Sankei Group.
February, 2017 Our Environmental Report (2016) receive the Excellence Award at the 20th Environmental Communication Awards sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment.
March Togoshiginza Station on the Ikegami Line wins the Grand Prize at the 20th Wood Utilization Competition sponsored by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
February, 2020 Our Integrated Report (2019) and Environmental Report (2019) win the Excellence Award at the 23rd Environmental Communication Awards sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment.
February Our efforts to achieve zero CO₂ emissions on the Setagaya Line win us the Minister of the Environment Award for Outstanding Efforts in Environmentally Friendly Transportation at the 11th EST Traffic Environment Awards sponsored by the EST Promotion Committee and the Foundation for Promoting Personal Mobility and Ecological Transportation.
February Our Integrated Report (2020) receives the Excellence Award at the 24th Environmental Communication Awards sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment.
June Minami-machida Grandberry Park District won the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Award in the Urban Space Category of the 2020 Urban Landscape Awards sponsored by the "Urban Landscape Day" Executive Committee.
October Minami-machida Grandberry Park won the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Award at the 40th Green City Awards sponsored by  the Organization for Landscape and Urban Green Infrastructure.
  Minami-machida Grandberry Park won the New Era Town Development Award at the 8th Platinum Vision Award sponsored by the Platinum Network, a general incorporated association.
November The initiative of Tokyu Hotels' Kawasaki King Sky Front Tokyu REI Hotel, "100% Renewable Energy! Japan's First 'CO2 Free Electricity Hotel,'" won the Grand Prize at the 9th Smart Lifestyle Awards sponsored by Kawasaki City.
February, 2021 Our Integrated Report (2020) receive the Excellence Award at the 24th Environmental Communication Awards sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment.
March Tokyu Line's SDGs Train 2020 (which introduces initiatives to realize a sustainable society and operates on 100% renewable energy), "Toward a Beautiful Era," won the Governor of Tokyo Award in the 4th Category (Car Body Advertising) of the 12th Tokyo Outdoor Advertising Competition sponsored by the Tokyo Outdoor Advertising Association.
December Minami-machida Grandberry Park won the Excellence Award at the Japan Society of Civil Engineers Design Prize 2021, sponsored by the Urban Landscape and Design Committee of the Japan Society of Civil Engineers.
February, 2022 Tokyu Ikegami Line Hatanodai Station, which utilizes timbers produced in Tama, won the Excellence Award in the "Wood City TOKYO Model Architecture Award" sponsored by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
June, 2023 Minami-machida Grandberry Park wins the Grand Prize for the 31st Global Environment Awards sponsored by the Fuji Sankei Group.
